This is the second post in the ‘Insights from Teaching’ Series
Creating a positive classroom environment is one of the most important factors in student success. A welcoming, structured, and engaging classroom helps students feel safe, respected, and ready to learn. It also makes a teacher’s work so much more enjoyable.
But how do we build such an environment?
Let’s explore practical strategies to create a positive classroom culture, establish clear expectations, and set the tone for effective learning.
1. Set Clear and Doable Classroom Rules
Rules should be simple, fair, and consistently enforced. Instead of focusing on what students shouldn’t do, frame rules around what they should do.
✅ Keep it simple
Limit rules to 4-5 clear expectations.
✅ Use positive language
Instead of “No talking,” try “Listen when others are speaking.”
✅ Be consistent
Apply rules fairly to all students.
Example classroom rules:
- Respect others – Listen when someone is talking.
- Be responsible – Arrive prepared and complete your work.
- Stay engaged – Participate and ask questions.
- Keep it kind – Use positive language and actions.
- Take care of our space – Keep the classroom clean and organised.
2. Foster a Sense of Belonging
Students need to feel valued and included in the classroom. Small actions can make a big difference.
- ✅ Learn names quickly – Show students you see them as individuals.
- ✅ Use inclusive language – Avoid gendered or exclusive terms.
- ✅ Celebrate student strengths – Acknowledge effort and progress.
- ✅ Encourage collaboration – Group activities help build relationships.
3. Engage Students from the Start
The first 5 minutes of a lesson set the tone for learning. Engaging “tuning-in” activities help grab students’ attention and activate prior knowledge.
Examples of tuning-in activities:
- Roll marking questions – Ask students a fun or thought-provoking question.
- Character scales – Use a visual scale to gauge how students feel.
- Stimulus writing – Show an image or quote and ask students to respond.
- Compass points – Display an issue and have students discuss different perspectives.
4. Establish Predictable Routines
- ✅ Start every class the same way – e.g. Use a “Do Now” activity or some sort of primer so students expect to be an active participant from the start of every class.
- ✅ Post the daily agenda – Helps students anticipate what’s coming (especially helps students with anxiety).
- ✅ Use consistent transitions – Reduce disruptions with structured transitions.
- ✅ End with reflection– Exit tickets help reinforce learning.
5. Model the Behaviour You Expect
Students watch what you do more than what you say. Be the role model for respect, curiosity, and engagement.
- ✅ Stay calm and patient – Even when students challenge you.
- ✅ Admit mistakes – Show that learning is a process for everyone.
- ✅ Practice active listening – Give students your full attention when they speak.
Conclusion
A positive classroom environment doesn’t happen overnight, but small, consistent efforts can create a space where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
Which of these strategies have you found effective in your classroom? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
